Contact GoldStatsFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How do I  add the HTML code to my page(s)?
Open your page with your favorite web page editor. Then open the page source and copy and paste the HTML code somewhere between <BODY .... > and </BODY> tags. Save the modified page and then upload it to your server in ASCII mode. You can add this code to any number of your pages that you wish to monitor through Goldstats membership.

Q: What to do if I forgot my password, lost the HTML code or wish to update my account?
Visit the Goldstats Log-In page.

Q: What is IP?
This is an unique internet number assigned to every computer connected to Internet. It is used as an unique internet address for the machine. "Unique visitors" stats are based on this number. Example for an IP: 215.160.16.25

Q: How does GoldStats select the top sites?
The ranking is based on the number of unique visitors entered the member's site during the last 3-4 days.

Q: How does GoldStats calculate the unique visitors number?
We split your log file in parts of 300 hits and count the unique IP's in each part. The final number is sum of all unique visitors calculated.

Q: Is there a way to keep our visitor's Referral details for the year?
Goldstats keeps your web site visitors details for 7 days. You can always query the last 7 days of referral details, search engine keywords and log details. After 7 days our system takes general visitors count information and deletes the details. This allows us to keep the amount of server space to a reasonable level for all members. If you need to keep more detailed information including all details we suggest getting your own web server that keeps logs on your own server. You can find a great host for doing this at http://virtualis-servers.com (and their logging stats program is even called goldstats).

Q: I pasted the Goldstats code into a frames page. The frameset is served from one domain while the pages, that contain the code, are generated from a different domain. It causes an error, what am I doing wrong.
Goldstats, for security reasons, has to be displayed and registered to the domain that is displaying the Goldstats tracking code. You can not have a frameset from one domain and have the Goldstats code inserted on pages from a different domain showing in any of the frames. All pages in the frames MUST be served from the same domain as the top page. This is because of security. Essentially if we allowed this you could frame others pages and get visitor statistics about their visitors, that is a violation of privacy for the person who may own that domain name.

Q: We're changing our email address! Is there an option where can I update it?
You can not. Goldstats uses your email address to identify your account in our database. Although we do not share your email address with anyone it is important account identifier. When you sign up, your email address is encrypted and that is now your "internal" account name. For security reasons, we can not manually decrypt this code. If you change your email address you must delete your current Goldstats code and sign up for a new account with your new email address. Your email address must be valid. At any time any correspondence to your listed email address are returned we will suspend or delete your account.

Q: I am on GMT-5 or Eastern Standard Time. How do I fix the time on my stats?
The time that is displayed in the members reports is the current time of our servers. Our dedicated servers are located in North Hollywood, CA (USA) which is Pacific Standard Time (PST). Although we are working on allowing members to update and maintain their local time or the time zone of their own server we do not yet.

Q: When I look at my site it says no major engines found? I have my site listed with several.
We track the top 38 search engines. We know there are hundreds of them, but to support all of them with the ever changing listing habits is an impossible task (well at least for what we charge). 80% or more of your search engine traffic will come from one of the top 30 (we added 8 more to make you happy). For a complete list of the search engines we DO track see our List Of Engines.

Q: I lost the HTML code for my page. Where do I go to get replacement code?
You can retrieve the HTML code for your account at anytime from the member's area at http://goldstats.com/members. Enter your email address and password and click on "Get HTML" to receive replacement code for your account.

Q: I want to update my account Name, URL & Category. Where do I do that?
You can change your account information (excluding email address) at anytime from the member's area at http://goldstats.com/members. Enter your email address and password and click on "Update Account" to go to your account change form.

Q: I have just pasted the code provided into my web page and an additional 'blank' icon appears next to the GoldStats button. Can I get rid of this? I've been using FrontPage2000 for authoring.
FrontPage 98 and 2000 have a nasty habit of changing HTML code that you enter directly into the HTML view of a page. It is best to choose "insert > HTML" from your menu and enter the HTML code into the window that appears. Click on OK and it should be inserted correctly by FrontPage.

Q: When I click on your GoldStats button, Goldstats web site launches within the main frame of our site. I believe this is called 'trapping' . Is there a way to have your site appear in the whole page?
This was a problem we noticed too a few months back. We have since updated the HTML code so if the logo is clicked on, our site will not appear within your frameset. If this is still occurring on your web site, please return to the members area (http://goldstats.com/members) and get "new" code for your pages.

Q: We have upgraded to the Premier Goldstats service. Where do we get the updated code for our account so our site will not show the Goldstats logo.
You use the same tracking HTML code for the premier account as the free account. After you submit an premier upgrade request (and payment is verified) we "flag" your account in our systems. Every time the code is called from your pages our system will check your account status. If it is flagged as a premier account our system sends back a 1 pixel transparent GIF which is invisible to the visitor. If you have signed up for the Premier account and the logo is showing your account payment has either not been processed yet, the code is corrupt or your membership period has expired.

Q: What if I need more help?
As always, if you have further questions please email us at web@goldstats.com or use our On-Line Support Form. Who knows, your question may just be on this page the next time you visit :)
